In 1912, Anna Jarvis trademarked the phrases "second Sunday in May" and "Mother's Day", and created the Mother's Day International Association. "She was specific about the location of the apostrophe; it was to be a singular possessive, for each family to honour their mother, not a plural possessive commemorating all mothers in the world. ( An alternate explanation is that it is a day that normally comes about nine months after Father’s Day . )

In the mosaic of our memories of our Mother , there is that little tile called discipline . Generally it is very small tile , less than 1 % of these memories . As this Blog is about spanking , I will concentrate on maternal discipline here .

I grew up in the Golden Age of Spanking , the 1950s . Many , if not most of my friends were spanked using an ingenious variety of methods either at home or at school ( one even was spanked at Scouts ) . My mother was an English and History teacher and her abilities with the paddle were well known to her students . I was “ corrected “ by hand and hairbrush ( once with a yard stick , which kept breaking until only an ineffective piece was left in her hand ) . When she went for her hairbrush , I went for the middle of the rose garden ( which neither parent could penetrate ) . Sometimes the delay let the smoke clear and the threatened spanking did not happen . Most of the time it did , I was dragged up to my room , the door was closed to cut off further escape while the chair was turned around . I am now sure that she had martial arts training because I was pinned across her lap seconds later . The lecture started as the hairbrush started , a favourite phrase was “ It is time for you to turn over a new leaf “* . Unlike at school , where stoic toughness was highly valued , I would cry as soon as possible , it seemed that this would shorten the spanking .

Around this time each year more references to maternal spanking appear . Here are two :

"I was about 12 years old and sassed my gran . She swatted my bottom . I snarled , ' You are not my momma , you can't spank me ! ' Gran , without hesitation , said , ' No , but I'm your momma's momma , and I'll spank her if she doesn't like it ! ' .... " Recently, my 8-year-old got her bottom swatted while at my mom's house and lo and behold if she did not parrot my protest from years ago . And , you guessed it , my mom repeated my Gran's adage . “
