.A while ago , I saw a video clip of a prison style caning . I noted that the cane was being held with the arm straight up in the air and the cane almost resting against the back . The stroke was delivered by moving the arm down , across the body whilst straightening the wrist . At the time I thought that the eventual impact was increased because the cane was being moved over a greater distance and left it at that . However , after watching a documentary on the use of a long bow , I realised that there was more than the distance travelled by the cane involved in the eventual impact . The other factor was the use of the back muscles , which are much stronger than the arm muscles on their own . The archer brings the bow string back to a point where further movement requires use of the back muscles , it is this additional movement that stores most of the force in the bow . The same thing applies to Pitchers in Baseball , Bowlers in Cricket , the Golfer's back swing , etc. .

Likewise in spanking ( with or without using an implement ) , the force of the impact on the bottom significantly increases as the arm is raised to as high as possible above and behind the spanker's head and shoulders . An example of this principle in practice ( from Leda Nu West ) :

.An example using the bending over position , the delay between the strokes allows each to " sink in " before the next is given . The video may be from Firm Hand :

The technique of using the back muscles may be combined with a run up to the point of impact and a final flick of the wrist to produce the ultimate forceful stroke . Here is an example from Cassie Canes :
