For an economist , Galbraith is extremely readable , with a dry and ironic sense of humour . What happened in 1929 has happened again , change the dates and references to margin trading etc. to CDO's ( Collateralized Debt Obligations ) and here we are 80 years later . All of this because of greed and lack of proper regulation . Enough of this , read the book .
In hard times some businesses do well , food , mass entertainment and liquor , anything to take our minds off our problems i.e. escapism . I believe the spanking industry will survive and possibly grow . Why , because businesses who do not stray too far from the bottom smacking core of spanking will always have a market . $50 DVDs , $100 paddles and $300 an hour sessions may be a bit slow , but most people can scrape $10 together for the occasional download . Spending $30 or $40 on a 30 day site membership is less than the cost of a night out on the town and possibly less than the cost of the taxi home . There is zero possibility of contracting swine flu* !
Spanking focuses the mind , tensions are released and problems go away for a while , all for little or no cost . All that is required is a little imagination , someone to play with ( or D.I.Y. ) , some time , a place to do it and perhaps a few implements from the supermarket or hardware store .
I have noticed a new way of generating income. Pretty simple , join a spanking pay site , download the videos , upload to a commercial download site , cut a few minutes from the video and place on a video sharing site with a link to the download site and wait for the % cut from the download site's fees to come in ( or until the Police come ) . - P.S. The Police apparently have come , the listing I saw has been removed .

* ( 30 April , 2009 ) With swine flu being the topic of the day , it is worth remembering what was said around the time of the Bird Flu epidemic . One of the best ways of protecting populations from health threats is to have a basic standard of living and a functioning public health system . ( Also applies in natural and other disasters . ) In the case of Bird and Swine ( N1H1 ) flues , this was not the case in the countries of origin . Poor Americans are at risk , although finally a President is doing something about it . The bugs do not care if you are insured or not , these infections can spread rapidly , at first amongst the poor , but then to the general population . For this reason all countries must have an affordable universal health care system , regardless of national cost . Economic rationalists forget that prevention is less costly than the cure and that is before the social cost is factored in .
The G 7 - G ( whatever ) Groups have to adopt policies that will ensure that the world has this basic standard of living ( including affordable food ) .
Why is the above not before the public every day ? Well most governments want the problem to go away , pay a lot of the experts and are subject to pressure from ( industry ) lobbyists .
Corrupt governments and officials generally take these basic rights away from populations , Africa is riddled with corruption . Example : Somalia , where the fishermen turned into pirates when no one stopped factory fishing fleets destroying their traditional fishing grounds . Now their piracy has to be stopped with both diplomacy and bullets . In Afghanistan , opium farming could have been eliminated when the ratbag Taliban were first kicked out . All that was required at the time was a subsidy to grow other crops !
